China, today: in a wasteland of environmental depredation, Yuan ekes out a living by hauling coal to roadside vendors, greasing palms at every turn in hopes of turning the meagerest profit for his wife and daughter. But the veins are being mined out, everyone wants a bigger cut, and times are getting tougher for a small-time independent trucker. When Yuan's left for dead after a doublecross, he only wants one thing back: the truck that was his livelihood. Inspired by Wang Bing's harrowing documentary "Coal Money," this is a hard-hitting tale of poverty, corruption, and man's contempt for man, against a backdrop poisoned by heedless development.
