This book was on so many “best of 2021” lists that I just HAD to check it out. And, honestly, I’m glad I did - even as the subject matter is difficult and serious and as far away as possible from the usually spectacular, explosive, fun superhero stories. “Barbalien: Red Planet” is set in 1986, at the height of the AIDS crisis, and features a gay superhero (this isn’t really a spoiler - in page two, Barbalien is judged on Mars for treason, and for coupling with an earthling male) and a bunch of...
